7 Easy Tips to Better Manage Your Small Business Social Media

When BW Concepts was just getting off the ground, I was spitballing ideas with a friend with a similar business. She gave me blog topic ideas, some of which included how to write a blog, better ways to manage social media, etc.

I finally said to her, “If I do that, am I giving away for free what I’m asking people to pay me for?!”

Her response still resonates with me today. She noted that there’s nothing proprietary about writing blogs, or managing social media – no secret sauce. My actual “product” is consistency and experience. That’s what people will pay for. So, in that vein, I wanted to share some ideas on how to better manage your business’s social media so that it doesn’t feel overwhelming but instead builds trust, boosts visibility, and drives sales.

Here are seven tips to help you manage your business social media page more effectively:

1. Choose the Right Platform—Not Every Platform

You don’t have to be on every social network. Instead, focus on where your audience actually spends time. Start with one or two platforms and do them well.

  • Instagram & Facebook work well for visual brands like bakeries, salons, and retail shops.
  • LinkedIn is great for B2B services or professional consulting.
  • TikTok is ideal for personality-driven brands or those targeting younger audiences.

2. Use a Content Calendar

Posting randomly leads to burnout and inconsistency. Plan your posts in advance with a simple calendar.

  • Choose weekly themes (e.g. Tip Tuesday, Behind-the-Scenes Friday).
  • Schedule posts using tools like Later, Buffer, or Meta Business Suite (free!).
  • Aim for 2–4 posts per week to stay visible without overwhelming yourself.
  • Stories and grid posts do not have to be unique!

3. Post More Than Just Sales

Social media should be a conversation, not just a billboard. Mix it up:

  • Educational tips related to your niche
  • Testimonials or reviews
  • Behind-the-scenes photos or process videos
  • Polls, questions, or fun facts
  • Occasional promotions or product highlights

4. Batch Create Your Content

Instead of scrambling to post every day, set aside 1–2 hours a week to create content in batches.

  • Take 5 product photos in one shoot
  • Write 3–4 captions in one sitting
  • Use tools like Canva to design branded posts quickly

You’ll save time and your content will look more consistent.

5. Respond to Comments and DMs

Engagement is a two-way street. Replying to comments and messages builds trust and tells the algorithm you’re active.

  • Set aside 10–15 minutes a day to check notifications
  • Use quick replies for FAQs
  • Thank people for positive feedback or shares

6. Use Hashtags and Location Tags

Hashtags help new people find you. Location tags boost visibility in your community.

  • Use relevant hashtags (avoid spammy ones like #instagood)
  • Mix 3–5 popular hashtags with 3–5 niche or local ones
  • Always tag your city or neighborhood when possible

7. Check Your Insights

Most platforms offer free analytics—they tell you which posts did well, what times your audience is active, and who’s engaging.

  • See what types of posts perform best and do more of that
  • Don’t worry about going viral—steady growth and connection is the goal

You don’t have to be perfect—you just have to be present and authentic. Show up consistently, speak to your audience like real people, and don’t be afraid to have fun with it.
